Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are writing to inform you about an important update regarding how our school communicates with students outside of classroom hours.
During the 2025 Regular Session, the Kentucky General Assembly passed Senate Bill 181, which requires that all electronic communication between school personnel (including teachers, coaches, and volunteers) and students occur only through traceable, school-designated communication platforms. The goal of this law is to protect students and staff by ensuring transparency and accountability in all school-related electronic communications.
Key Provisions of SB 181:
Exclusive Use of Approved Platforms: All communication between school personnel and students must take place through one or more designated, traceable programs or applications approved by the school or district.
Parent/Guardian Access: Parents and guardians will have the ability to access and review all messages exchanged through these approved platforms.
No Private or Untraceable Messaging: Text messages, personal social media messaging, or other non-approved means of communication will no longer be permitted for school-related interactions with students.
The principal will be notifying parents and guardians of the approved traceable communication systems within the first 10 days of each school year. Instructions for the approved system will be provided also.
What This Means for You:
If your child’s teacher or coach needs to communicate with them electronically, it will only happen through the approved system(s).
You will be notified of how to access your student’s communication history on the designated platform(s). We encourage you to stay engaged and reach out if you have any questions about this process or how to access the communication logs.
This new law reflects a growing commitment to student safety and transparency, and we appreciate your support as we work to fully comply with Senate Bill 181.
If you have questions or need assistance with accessing the designated communication tools, please contact the school at (606) 843-6221
Sincerely, East Bernstadt Staff

Revised School Policy Regarding a Tobacco-Free Campus
Policy change regarding the use and possession of tobacco, alternative nicotine products, and vapor products within our school district. The health and safety of our students are our top priorities, and we believe it is crucial to communicate clearly about our policies and the consequences for violations.
Policy Overview
Prohibition: The use or possession of tobacco, alternative nicotine products, and vapor products is strictly prohibited on school property. This rule applies to all students, whether they are on school grounds, traveling to and from school, or attending school-related events.
Penalties for Violations:
First incident: If a student is found in violation of this policy for the first time, the District will confiscate the prohibited items. The student and their parent or guardian will receive evidence-based, age-appropriate nicotine cessation information. This information includes materials, programs, and referrels to support cessation efforts.
Second Incident: A second violation will result in the same intervention as the first incident, but will also involve disciplinary actions as outlined in the District Code of Acceptable Behavior and Discipline.
Third and Subsequent Incidents: Repeated violations may lead to in-school or out-of-school suspension. During any in-school suspension, the student will be given the opportunity to participate in an evidence-based, age-appropriate nicotine education program.
Support and Resources: We understand that nicotine addiction can be challenging, and we are committed to providing support for students who need it. The school counselor and other mental health services are available to assist with resources and programs aimed at helping students make healthier choices. Additional online resources can be found at My Life, My Quit (for those 17 and younger), as well as the Food & Drug Administration's (FDA's) Talk to Kids About the Risks of Vaping and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention's (CDC's) E-Cigarettes and Youth: What Parents Need to Know.
We appreciate your support in reinforcing this important policy at home. By working together, we can help ensure a safe and healthy environment for all our students. If you have any questions or need further information, please do not hesitate to contact the school office. A copy of this policy can also be found in the 2024-2025 Code of Conduct.
Thank you for your attention to this matter and for your continued support.

⭐️ Your Child's Attendance Matters! ⭐️
Did you know that regular school attendance is one of the strongest predictors of student success? Every day at school is a chance for your child to learn, grow, and connect with friends and teachers.
As a reminder, under the law that began last year, schools are required to notify the County Attorney's Office if a student reaches 15 or more unexcused absences in a school year. Our goal is to partner with you to prevent this from happening--because we know every day counts!
Thank you for working with us to give your child the best opportunity to succeed! 💙
